Dolend op het internet valt Toon zijn oog op een vreemde foto: een rechttoe-rechtaan gefotografeerde close up van een scheurtje in een Duits legeruniform uit de 2e wereldoorlog. Een banaal stuk textiel met een scheur erin, en verder: primair en snel uitgevoerd naaiwerk met dikke draden in ruwe stoffen, alles bijna tastbaar vastgelegd op de foto.
De foto blijkt afkomstig uit een catalogus van een antiquariaat, bedoeld om de staat van het kledingstuk te documenteren.
Toon is geïntrigeerd door de grote discrepantie tussen het materiële aspect, een foto, een scheurtje, en de beladen geschiedenis achter het onderwerp. Het illustreert hoe relatief betekenis in een medium is, en hoe fotografische transparantie ook tot schoonheidsbeleving kan leiden.
De titel is een fragment uit een zin die Sherlock Holmes tegen Dr. Watson zei: “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth!”
Wandering around the internet, Toon catches his eye on a strange photo: a straightforwardly photographed close-up of a tear in a German army uniform from the 2nd World War. A banal piece of textile with a tear in it, and further: primary and quickly executed sewing with thick threads in rough fabrics, all almost tangibly captured in the photo.
The photo appears to come from a catalogue of an antiquarian bookshop, intended to document the condition of the garment.
Toon is intrigued by the great discrepancy between the material aspect, a photo, a tear, and the loaded history behind the subject. It illustrates how relative meaning is in a medium, and how photographic transparency can also lead to the experience of beauty.
The title is an excerpt from a sentence Sherlock Holmes said to Dr. Watson: “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth!”
