Toon Saerens zag in 2019 op televisie een groep mensen die zich in Skopje hadden verenigd rond het ruiterbeeld van Alexander de Grote om hun nationalistische gevoelens te uiten. Op dat moment besefte de kunstenaar dat die standbeelden, waar we meestal achteloos voorbij lopen, minder onschuldig zijn dan we denken.

De reeks HEROES, Approved is een reflectie op de functie van die beelden, de waarden en idealen die ze vertegenwoordigen. Tijdens het werk aan de reeks werd de bekommernis van de kunstenaar versterkt door de controverse rond de standbeelden van Leopold II.

In 2019 Toon Saerens saw on television a group of people who had united in Skopje around the equestrian statue of Alexander the Great, to express their nationalist feelings. At that moment, the artist realized that those statues, which we usually walk by carelessly, are less innocent than we think. 

The HEROES, Approved series is a reflection on the function of those statues, the values and ideals they represent. During the work on the series, the artist’s concern was reinforced by the controversy over the statues of Leopold II.
