De Franse schilder Jacques-Louis David streefde met zijn kunst politieke doelen na. Met illustraties van heroïsche verhalen uit de klassieke oudheid wilde hij het volk bekeren en heropvoeden. De theatrale opbouw, heldere techniek en idealiserende ondertoon moesten de kijker bij de keel grijpen en overtuigen.

Toon Saerens heeft veel belangstelling voor de dubbelzinnigheid van representatie. Voor de reeks ‘David’s Gestures’ selecteerde hij iconische details uit de werken van David. Hij ontdeed ze van hun context, stileerde ze tot grafische motieven en verwerkte ze in speelse caleidoscopische composities.

The French painter Jacques-Louis David pursued political goals with his art. With illustrations of heroic stories from classical antiquity, he wanted to convert and re-educate the people. The theatrical structure, clear technique and idealizing undertone had to grab the viewer by the throat and convince them.  

Toon Saerens is very interested in the ambiguity of representation. For the series ‘David’s Gestures’ he selected iconic details from David’s works. He stripped them of their context, stylized them into graphic motifs and incorporated them into playful kaleidoscopic compositions.
